Mrs. Roy

My name is Mrs. Roy, and I currently teach General Science, Healthy for Life/PE and a Strategies class to the Mighty Middles of New Vistas School. I have a background in Speech-Language Pathology, with a Master of Arts degree in Audiology.  I received a Master of Education degree, with a concentration in Special Education, from Lynchburg College. I am currently endorsed to teach students with learning disabilities as well as students with emotional/behavioral issues.  I took classes at Randolph College and Lynchburg College to earn an additional endorsement to teach middle school science. When I’m not busy puttering in my garden, I enjoy going to workshops to learn about science “stuff”!

General Science –
The General Science curriculum gives students an opportunity to explore different branches of science including Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth/Space Science.  Along with reinforcing the concepts of lab safety and equipment, we will be using inquiry to explore topics including Earth’s atmosphere and weather, water and watersheds, energy and energy resources, living organisms and ecosystems, rocks and soil, and Earth’s renewable and nonrenewable resources!  We will be completing a variety of lab experiments, and plan to participate in a number of field trip experiences!  Please plan on joining us for our annual Science Fair in April - you’ll get to see our inquiry specialists in action!!

Healthy for Life/PE -
Middle School Healthy for Life/PE classes are held every afternoon (except Wednesdays) during 7th period. During this time, students are able to participate in basketball, volleyball, kickball, tennis, soccer, and football in addition to our daily mile-long walks. We also engage in classroom discussions of health related topics including nutrition, exercise, and appropriate lifestyle choices needed to be “healthy for life”.

Strategies –
The NVS Strategies class is just that – equipping students with a variety of learning strategies that will give them a solid foundation for lifelong learning.  Areas of discussion will include organization, homework and studying, taking tests, and strategies for listening, focusing, and taking notes in the classroom.  Students will be challenged to think about how their current approach in these areas is working or not working.  This is going to be a great class!
