The Arts at New Vistas

The Arts at New Vistas School are flourishing! Elementary classes participate in enrichment activities, while Middle and Upper School students participate in Studio Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, and Drama. Each spring, all schools showcase their achievements in our annual Can Do Night. There, students displayed artwork, recited poetry, performed musical pieces, and danced.

The entire student body enjoys the arts. In addition to specific classes, students are exposed to fine art through the monthly exhibits held in our lobby through the Art All Around program. Since inception in 2006, the program has included exhibitions by area artists such as Pam Wallace, Kelly Mattox, Karen Bowden, David Johnson, John Morgan, and many others.

Studio Art participants learn to work in a variety of media: charcoal, graphite, acrylic and watercolor painting, stained glass, ceramics, and printmaking. Field trips include frequent visits to the Maier Museum, the Daura Gallery, and the Lynchburg Art Club, as well as visits to sites, like the Anne Spencer Garden, which offer rich subject matter. Skills learned in classes, such as creating stained glass pieces, have blossomed into a lifelong hobby for many of our students. Ceramic skills—both hand-building and throwing techniques—have been honed this season through cooperative work with Academy of Fine Arts; students in both sections of Studio Art have completed a four lesson course with May Carter at the Academy and produced beautiful work.
