Message from the Assistant Head of School - Lisa J. D. Thomas

New Vistas School strives to be a safe, nurturing place for students to learn and grow academically, physically, and socially.  To that end, the following are a few reminders to keep the NVS community safe and enjoyable for all its members.

 Contraband Items

  1. No potential weapons such as knives, guns, razors, etc; explosives, such as firecrackers and fireworks; or projectiles, such as slingshots or handmade shooting devices are allowed on school grounds at any time.
  2. Students are not allowed to have medications of any sort; only a parent or guardian may bring any type of medication onto campus.
  3. Cellular phones, pagers, and unauthorized audio/video devices (PDAs, CD players, MP3 players, IPods, PSPs, Nintendo DS, etc.) are not allowed.
  4. Any contraband item will be confiscated.  Only a parent or guardian will be able to retrieve the item.

 

 Dress Code

Any apparel, hairstyle, or cosmetic that creates a safety concern, tends to distract from the educational process, or causes disturbances among other students will not be allowed.  An infraction of the dress code will be reported by any faculty or staff member to the Assistant Head of School as soon as it is observed.

  1. Clothing must not have holes, rips, tears, or cuts.
  2. Outerwear such as coats may not be worn inside the school or classrooms.
  3. Hats, bandanas, hoods over the head, sweatbands, or sunglasses may not be worn inside the school.
  4. Shirts and tops must be size appropriate—neither overly baggy nor tight.  Tops must at least touch the waistband of pants or skirts with arms fully raised.  No tank tops, spaghetti straps, or see-through clothing is allowed.
  5. Pants, skirts, or shorts must fit appropriately.  Pants must be at least off the ground and not sagging or bagging.  Extremely wide leg pants or military style pants are not permitted.
  6. Dresses, jumpers, skirts, and shorts must me at least fingertip length when arms are down by the sides.
  7. Appropriate underwear must be worn, but may not be visible at any time.
  8. Shoes must be worn at all times.  No military style or steel-toed boots are permitted.  Heels on female’s shoes should be comfortable but precarious.  Some shoe styles may not be allowed during physical education.
  9. Students may be asked to remove earrings and/or other piercings if they are deemed a distraction and/or a safety hazard.
  10. No chains are permitted.
