Welcome to Ms. Tweedy’s Classroom
Tweedy’s Third Grade Tigers
Welcome to the 2nd semester of our 2007-2008 school year. I hope that this year has been a good one for everyone. We have had a pretty successful year in the classroom and hope to move on to bigger and better things during this next semester.
Cursive Writing
Cursive writing is very important to our third grade student’s future. We will be using the “Handwriting Without Tears” program. It was developed by Jan Z. Olsen, an occupational therapist. We will also be continuing to practice our regular printing in the classroom.
Homework
Students will generally have homework each night. Occasionally, students will finish a classroom assignment. During this time they are allowed to silent read or begin working on their homework assignments. If a student has completed their homework, they will place it in their take home folders to turn in the next day and will put a check in the finished box in their agenda, beside that assignment.
Reading
SRA Reading Mastery will continue this semester. We will be covering at least one lesson per day, except for special activity days, in which case we may do two lessons on certain days. Homework, which will be assigned daily, and will be practice of previously learned materials. This repetition helps to ensure that information in retained and not lost.
We will be learning literary terms and elements and combining them with literature from our basal readers and other outside sources during the semester. We will do a poetry unit, a unit revolving around a chapter book along with other short stories and much, much more!
**Please continue to encourage your child to read and don’t forget to fill in you book calendar each night! School trips to Pizza Hut will be announced monthly and as far in advance as possible.

MATH
During the 2nd semester, there will be math homework each day. These sheets will help the students practice skills that we have covered previously. Hopefully, this will keep the concepts fresh in their minds. The first week we will continue with our unit on money. (Identification, adding and subtracting coins and bills to $5) We will then move on to telling time to the time, using a calendar to measure time and ordinal numbers. This will lead us into 2 digit addition and subtraction (with and without regrouping). This will all pave the way for our exploration of 2and 3 dimensional shapes, fractions and measurement. We will end our year with delve into multiplication and division.
